The Common Market for Eastern and Southern African States (COMESA), presents an exciting opportunity for importers as well as exporters. With a market of over 300 million people and bringing together 20 countries, the region imports more than US$17 billion and exports over US$13 billion worth of goods each year.

Much of this is intra-regional hence the target is to reduce tariffs for intra-regional exports to zero during the year 2,000. Moving forward, common external tarriff (CET) and further strengthening of the Free Trade Area (FTA) should create more opportunities.
