Mutati commends COMESA
08/06/2009
Lusaka - Commerce Minister Felix Mutati says 70 percent of Zambia's reported economic growth was generated through exports to countries under COMESA in the last eight years.
Mr Mutati said COMESA has a positive international trade balance and the economic gains that Zambia is realising from the regional bloc are real.
The minister said this at the on going 13th COMESA Heads of State and Government Summit in Victoria Falls Town in Zimbabwe.
Mr. Mutati said there is need for COMESA member states to work together to promote trade within the region before they focus on Europe or America.
He said in 2008, Zambia's export to the region was about $500 million and that the launch of the regional integration is a positive trade surplus for Zambia.
He said it was only through trade and investment in a borderless region which shall see member states, including Zambia, achieve the 2015 Millenium Development Goals.
The Commerce Minister observed that the launch of the Customs Union by COMESA member states on Sunday would addresss the slowing down of economic growth in the region.
